Thursday, May 4, 1916   USS L-4 (SS-43) :  Commissioned with LTJG. Lewis Hancock, Jr., in command. Assigned to the Atlantic Submarine Flotilla, L-4 operated along the Atlantic coast, assisting in the development of new techniques in undersea warfare until April 1917.
Monday, May 4, 1942   USS S-40 (SS-145) :  S-40 departed the Queensland coast for her 4th war patrol. Ordered into the New Britain-New Ireland area, she reconnoitered Deboyne enroute and arrived on station on 16 May.
Monday, May 4, 1942   USS Herring (SS-233) :  Commissioned with LCDR. Raymond W. Johnson in command.
Tuesday, May 4, 1943   USS S-32 (SS-137) :  S-32 sailed West on her 8th war patrol. Enroute to the Kurils, she patrolled across possible Japanese reinforcement routes to Kiska and Attu, but almost zero visibility during the passage hindered hunting.
Tuesday, May 4, 1943   USS Seal (SS-183) :  Seal sank a tanker, the San Clemente Maru, but for the remainder of the patrol, was unable to close any targets.
Thursday, May 4, 1944   USS Flying Fish (SS-229) :  Flying Fish began her 10th war patrol, coordinated with the assault in the Marianas.
Thursday, May 4, 1944   USS Tinosa (SS-283) :  Tinosa sank 2 Japanese cargo ships, the Taibu Maru and Toyohi Maru, in a night attack.
Thursday, May 4, 1944   USS Picuda (SS-382) :  Picuda put to sea with the wolf pack to conduct her 2nd war patrol in the waters off Formosa.
Thursday, May 4, 1944   USS Parche (SS-384) :  An hour after midnight Parche was in position and scored 3 torpedo hits on the leading ship and 2 hits on the second freighter, sinking both. Parche scored 2 hits on the third freighter, which settled by the stern and began to list to port.
Friday, May 4, 1945   USS Peto (SS-265) :  Peto got underway for her 9th war patrol.
Friday, May 4, 1945   USS Lagarto (SS-371) :  Baya tried to contact Lagarto and she made no reply. Japanese records state that during the night of 3-4 May, mine layer Hatsutaka attacked a U.S. submarine in that location, it is presumed that Lagarto perished in battle with all hands. 85 men lost.
Friday, May 4, 1945   USS Trepang (SS-412) :  Trepang sank the minesweeper Number 20, which blew sky-high with a hit on her magazine. In addition, Trepang surfaced to shell a junk with a load of lumber.
Monday, May 4, 1964   USS Halibut (SSN-587) :  Halibut departed Pearl Harbor, HI. for the last Regulus missile patrol to be made by a submarine in the Pacific.
